Traveling to Cambodia

Cambodia is a country located in the southeastern region of Indochina peninsula. The people of this country live on less than a dollar per day and most of them make their living on agriculture.

Tourism is the second largest income source for the country after textiles. One should be quite careful when traveling to Cambodia due to various reasons. The important tourist places in Cambodia include Siem reap, Phnom Penh, Kempot and a few others. One can notice a relatively stable growth in the tourism industry here from past few years. The major language spoken here is Khmer language. However people who speak and understand English are there in almost all the major cities. Visitors from countries other than Malaysia, Vietnam Singapore, Laos, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand need visa to enter Cambodian territory.

UNICEF marked the country as the third most land mined country attributing to civilian causalities from 1970. Still, some places in this country are not safe to travel because of unrest and violence present there. The civilian war from past few decades has profound impact on the population ratio. Male population is nearly one in six parts of female population. You should exercise safety when traveling to certain places in Cambodia.

There are disputes going on the issue of Canadian border with different countries. So, exercise caution and keep up to date with the information about developments that might harm you in Cambodia. Pay proper attention to your personal protection. You should avoid demonstrations, protests and other political meetings as they may turn violent. Be careful if you are visiting Preah vihear temple which is present at the border of Thailand and Cambodia as there have been reported violence and use of heavy weapons in that region. Ta Krabei and Ta Moan temples that are present along the Cambodia Thai border as they are prone to civil disruptions and clashes between armies of both the countries. There are examples of armed robberies and assaults at the riverfront area and isolated beaches in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. You should be vigilant when traveling through these areas especially at night times.

While these are the safety issues that are present concerning the travel to Cambodian regions, the other side of Cambodia is beautiful nature with Buddhist shrines present all over the country. Buddhism is the faith of more than 85% of the people in the country. The cuisine of Cambodia has French influences on it. Football is very popular in Cambodia. Khmer architecture is the dominant here. The 12th century temple of Angkor Wat is a masterpiece. There are distinctive styles of dance and music here as an effect of Khmer empire.

There are good transport means available to this country in terms of air and sea ways. The rail and road system in Cambodia connects all the major cities. In Cambodia, road accident rate is high. So, it is better to be vigilant if you are traveling by roads. The major ports are Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. There are four airports situated in the country at Phnom Penh International Airport (Pochentong), Sihanoukville airport, Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport and Battambang airport.
